While backyard composting is my hobby of choice, it’s not for everyone. If you don’t have space for a compost pile, or it’s just not where your interest lies, you can still options see your organic material turned into a valuable soil amendment.
In Hamilton County (Ohio!) we are lucky to have local organizations
that can take your food scraps. Currently we have two service
providers: Queen City Commons
and Go Zero, often called “haulers” because
they haul organic material to a compost site for processing. I highly recommend
looking up each of them to get a feel for what is being offered near you!
Looking for a drop-off location to bring your food scraps in
Hamilton County? Checkout our map and find a location convenient for you! You can either use your
own container to transport, or sometimes your hauler can provide a food scrap
collection bucket for you. The hauler will then transport all the collected
materials from participants to a compost site. There is typically a fee for
participation in these programs, but you will know that you are diverting
material and keeping nutrients out of the landfill.
Some communities offer free food scrap drop offs for their residents, so check your community website to see if you are one of them! If
you don’t have a public drop-off but have the time to help, reach out to your
community and see if there are ways to get involved to set one up!
Business or Event Composting
You may be looking to host a zero-waste event or work in
food service and struggle to compost all of the material in your
backyard compost pile.Compost
haulers can likely offer service for your event or
business. Typically, there are options to either drop off collected materials
at a drop-off location, or the hauler can deliver containers directly to you
for collection.
We love our backyard composters, but we love our haulers too! In 2024, Hamilton County haulers diverted around 7,171 tons of food scraps from the landfill, creating a healthier community for all.
